Bartóks intense vioolconcert
29.01.2027, 20.15 Uhr
Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ
The acclaimed American violinist Leila Josefowicz performs as soloist in Béla Bartók’s intense Second Violin Concerto, a work teeming with brilliantly elusive melodies and a poignant blend of Balkan folk influences and twelve-tone music. Under the baton of principal guest director Bas Wiegers, the Munich Chamber Orchestra also presents a new work by Canadian-Dutch composer Trevor Grahl, winner of the 2025 Matthijs Vermeulen Prize. His adventurous music defies categorisation and refers to composers who preceded him.
The Munich Chamber Orchestra (German: Münchener Kammerorchester, or MKO) is an established name in Germany. The orchestra works with top-tier soloists and blends old and new with a fresh perspective, just as they are doing tonight. The evening concludes with Symphony No. 102 by Joseph Haydn, the ‘Father of the Symphony’. In addition to the two modern works, the orchestra shows Haydn’s penultimate symphonic mastery: music that feels effortlessly balanced and ‘simple’ on the surface, while hiding profound complexity underneath.
